From an ecological perspective India is a bewildering montage of habitats, topography, and climatic zones, from the alpine forests of the high Himalayas and steamy montane rainforests of the northeast, through the plains of the terai, the Thar Desert, and scrub forests of the Deccan Plateau to the tropical rainforests of the Western Ghats.

Protected in a series of sanctuaries comprising almost 5% of the total land mass, these diverse habitats contain an equally bewildering array and abundance of wild inhabitants - almost 1300 birds, more than half the birds of the Oriental Region, 350+ mammals including some of the most recognizable on earth, around 1500 species of butterfly and an almost equal number of subspecies, and 600 reptiles and amphibians.

While India occupies a large part of the Indo-Malayan bio-geographic zone, with floral and faunal forms showing clear Malayan affinities, it also contributes area to 3 of the world's recognized hotspots of biodiversity - the Western Ghats and Sri Lanka, the Himalaya, and Indo-Burma (including the Andaman Islands) - and a considerable number of endemics, concentrated in these regions, occur in India as a result.

Professionally led by knowledgeable and experienced tour leaders these tours operate with a small group size to ensure quality birding experiences at a highly competitive cost.
